We have 3 inches to spare as we squeeze our Town Car onto the elevator.  Plonk! The elevator jerks & we flinch.  Next day I speak(plead) with Tomasito(doorman) for an alternative parking space.  My prayers are answered & we settle in for a week among the ‘swells’ at our friends Nob Hill condo.  Our view is stunningly beautiful….the aqua marine bay, the Bastille aura of the Financial District & teeming Chinatown directly below us…..a perfect contrast to Smith Valley.    Best of all the condo is free & our benefactor never, never makes us feel beholden.  I wish you such a friend

Travels with Ron

Yesterday I was looking for a blank notebook to use at a writer’s workshop.  In a drawer beside my bed I found a long forgotten journal.  Curious, I thumbed through it & found an entry from 8/31/97….that’s 13 years ago.   ‘Writing is a direct expression of my being.  I may be caught up in a cosmos of happiness, desperation, glee or loneliness, but at the end of my pen is me.’ Hmm….let’s see, I had just retired, or more accurately, been canned.  The polite way they had informed me was ‘my job had been abolished’.

Orllyene has turned our living room into a yuletide extravaganza.  The chairs, stools & sofa are all arranged so that everyone can see & hear Fran easily.   ‘Thank you for coming,’ I say to the 20 attendees.  ‘I was quite surprised that so many of you were available to be here tonight, what with your busy schedules.  Fran & I are old, old friends….we have known each other for almost an hour & 20 minutes(laughter)

What a wretched week.  For days we had been following the weather to give us a clue about snow conditions in the Sierras.  Finally, I load up the car.  Our neighbor calls-‘My husband tells me there is snow on Hwy. 50.’  Our much anticipated trip is off.  Too risky. ‘What if Monday is no good as well…..the whole thing could be scrapped,’ I explode & go into a truculent pout.  A ‘recovering travel-holic,’ is not fun to be around.

Two Bridges, a Bay & a Very Steep Hill

As we edge our way into the right hand lane that will take us across the San Francisco Bay Bridge, a 2 inch deluge of rain dumps on us. How uncharacteristic for California.....Louisiana, perhaps, but the Bay Area, what's going on?I pull up to the toll booth, hand $4 to a woman who is many miles away. I say 'That does include a car wash, doesn't it? Her face is transformed....someone has noticed her & she beams, 'yes of course' and we speed off into the storm.
